FAQs

FAQs

These FAQs cover the most common questions about studying with me — what makes my method different, who each course is for, and what results you can expect in the first 60–90 days. You’ll also find practical answers on lesson format, support, 4- vs 5-string, practice time, access and refunds.

Who Are You And What’s Different About Your Method?

I’m Joe Hubbard — bassist, educator and recording artist — and my teaching isn’t built on random “licks & tricks.” I use a structured, language‑based approach that develops your time, feel and harmonic vocabulary in a progressive sequence. Each lesson builds on the last so you learn how to groove, read, create lines and make music you can actually use on gigs.

Who Are Your Courses For?

From committed beginners to advancing intermediates. If you’re returning after time away, the Bass Foundation Course gets you moving fast. If you’ve got the basics but feel stuck, the 2‑Year Bass Mastery path gives you a guided framework to break plateaus. I also offer more advance targeted trainings (e.g., II V I Encyclopedia) for specific goals.

What Results Should I Expect In The First 60–90 Days?

Clear improvement in fundamental time feel, fretboard fluency (knowing where notes live), consistent right‑ and left‑hand mechanics, and the ability to build bass lines that outline harmony. You’ll know what to practice and why, with weekly goals that stack.

How Is Your Teaching Structured?

I teach in three clear ways, depending on what you need.

Online courses give you a step-by-step path with video lessons, worksheets and play-along tracks so you build skills progressively (not random “one-off” tips).

Books/eBooks are focused resources you can work through at your own pace, with exercises you can apply immediately.

And if you want personal guidance, 1-to-1 Zoom lessons give you targeted feedback on your technique, time feel, theory and repertoire — based on your goals.

Will I Get Help If I’m Stuck? Is There A Community?

Yes. My flagship courses include a private study group for questions about the lesson material. I’m present in that space, and you’ll also learn from other committed bassists working through the same modules.

I Play A 5‑string. Is That Covered?

Definitely. Concepts are demonstrated for 4‑ and 5‑string players. Where fingerings differ, I point that out so you can translate quickly between instruments.

What Do I Actually Get When I Enroll?

A step‑by‑step curriculum: concise video lessons, PDFs (notation/graphics), practice plans, and play‑along tracks. No fluff—everything is designed to move you forward each week.

How Do I Choose The Right Starting Point?

Quick guide:

Newer/returning player → Bass Foundation Course.

Comfortable with basics but stuck → 2‑Year Bass Mastery.

Already an advanced player → I V I Encyclopedia

Need more focused attention → Jazz/walking lines focus → Walking Bass training (or the relevant e‑book if you prefer reading material).

If you’re someone who needs a dedicated coach to walk you through the steps and be accountable for your efforts, book a 1-to-1 Zoom lesson.

If you’re unsure, send me a quick note with your current level and goals—I’ll point you to the best on‑ramp.

How Much Time Should I Budget Each Week?

7 hours per week, 60 minutes daily. There is 168 hours per week…practising 7 hours a week leaves with 161 hours every week for you to complete everything else in your life!

Do I Need To Read Music Or Know Lots Of Theory?

No. I’ll teach the essentials in context so your reading and theory support your groove, not the other way around. If you’re already a reader, you’ll get deeper challenges; if you’re not, you’ll get a clear path to functional literacy.

What Gear or Software Do I Need?

For courses and books, you need a 4‑ or 5‑string bass, a tuner, an amp and a metronome.

For 121 lessons, you will need Zoom, a 4‑ or 5‑string bass, an audio interface and headphones.

Which Styles Does This Help With?

The method is style‑agnostic but highly practical: funk, rock, blues, Motown, jazz standards, modern R&B/neo‑soul. You’ll always connect technique to musical vocabulary you can deploy on actual songs.

How Long Do I Keep Access? Can I Upgrade Later?

Access terms can vary by program (e.g., time‑based vs. lifetime access). Where upgrades are offered (e.g., from annual to lifetime), I make the path clear on the course page. Always check the specific product page for current terms.

Do You Offer Instalments Or Bundles?

For larger courses, instalment options may be available at checkout. From time to time, I offer bundles that pair core training with specialist modules—if that’s active, you’ll see it on the product page.

What’s Your Refund Policy?

Because many products include instant digital downloads, refunds are limited. Please review each course page and the Terms carefully before purchasing. If you’re unsure which program fits, contact me first and I’ll advise honestly.

I’m Ready—What’s The Best Next Step?

Start by choosing the route that fits you best.

If you want a clear, guided path, pick an online course and follow it step by step.

If you prefer learning from written material at your own pace, choose a book/eBook and work through the exercises alongside your playing.

And if you want the fastest progress with personal feedback, book a 1-to-1 Zoom lesson and we’ll focus directly on your goals.

If you’re not sure which is right, send me a quick message with your current level, what you’re trying to improve, and how much time you can practice each week — and I’ll point you to the best next step.
