I’m excited to announce the launch of my new book- Functional Harmonic Concepts. The book will be focused on both diatonic and non-diatonic functional harmony, along with applied exercises and ear training examples that will enable you to hear the concepts that you will run across in real tunes. The course will include an e-book comprised of applied harmonic concepts related to the bass guitar and how to play them (including tab). It’s going to be a complete brain dump of everything that I know about ‘Functional Harmony.’
The book will be available to buy at a discounted price on March 3rd, so keep your eyes on your inbox! If you haven’t already signed up for my mailing list, then do that now so you can take advantage of the special discount price on March 3rd.

Here’s a Sample of What You Will Learn…
- Becoming grounded with the fundamentals of functional harmony
- Understanding the major/minor tonal systems
- Chord construction and relationships to both diatonic and non-diatonic harmony
- Understanding harmonic progressions from a compositional, interpretational and improvisational approach
- Putting it all together with a series of ear training drills and learning a jazz repertoire
- And…so much, much more!
I know that you might be saying that you already understand a little theory about harmony, but it’s really how deep you know these things that makes the difference on the bandstand. So get yourself ready for a huge transformation in becoming a better bass player!
Practice Smart, Work Hard & Play Creatively!
Joe

Hi,
I am from Cyprus and I cannot wait to read this book. My goal is to understand and learn ways to improvise on melodic minor progressions which,to me, most important part that missing in my playing. Also, may be you can show us the shortcuts and fast thinking methods that you develop while improvising.
Thanks,
Hi Joe,
I’ve just finished watching the video you emailed over, and I have to say I can’t wait to order this book! I’d like to think my theory and understanding of music and how it’s used by the many instruments, is fairly decent, but I’m well aware of my limitations. This books seems like it’s gonna have the missing pieces of the puzzle for me!
Really great work! Keep it going dude!
James
Sounds great. Will this be a compliment or replacement to the Bassment program you have on your subscription lessons? I have one more week to get to your functional harmony section so can’t wait to start that.
Thanks,
Barry
It’s a compliment- but a stand alone resource as well.

Sounds good Joe. When is it available for purchase?

Seems really interesting to have a book with your music knowledge inside. Waiting for it!!!
Mr. Hubbard,
I’m looking forward to your publication. Can’t wait for it’s release!
From your style of teaching, I know this will be a wonderful addition to my studies and library.
THANK YOU!
I am what you call a Swiss cheese guy. Its time to fill in the “holes”. This book looks like a definitive approach to doing just that. Can’t wait to purchase one.
I always get a lot out of your seminars on SBL. I’m really looking forward to this book to help fill in the gaps of my harmonic knowledge. Keep up the good work!
Hi Joe, Bring it on! I can’t wait … sounds comprehensive and transformative and will let me work on material that will improve my overall musical ability.
Sounds intriguing – I’m looking forward to the release!
I’ve been looking forward to this book of Joe’s on Functional Harmony. In my lessons with Joe, Joe has been teaching me about Functional Harmony so, in addition to my lesson notes, I am expecting this book to be like a ‘textbook’ that I can go back and refer to, together with relevant exercises.
If you have ever attended, watched, or re-watched any of Joe’s seminars on Scott’s Bass Lessons or, more recently, on No Treble, you will appreciate that Joe is up there with true musicianship and his skill is being able to transfer that information of musical theory into practical knowledge for his students via a structured format with accompanying, and musically relevant, exercises.
Joe – Can’t wait to order the new book. Hopefully this will help me get out of being one of those “Swiss Cheese” guys. Thanks Joe for putting this together and sharing the brain dump !!
Really looking forward to this book, keep me updated!
Joe, the book sounds great – perfect for a swizz cheese player like me!
Thank you Joe for sharing your knowledge and making a huge impact on all bass players . God bless Aloha from Maui Hawaii

( at least in my musical yourney)
Keep up the good work joe ?
Sounds very interesting. An instruction book by you is like gold. Really looking forward to getting this and diving into your lessons.
Hi Joe,
This book seems to me very structured.
I think the book is a must and will help all bass players to achieve their goals, and mine of course … I expect March 3rd.
Thank you very much.
Bruno

Hi, will it only be available as a “regular” paper book, or will it also be issued as an eBook? I’m really interested, but I’m worried about the shipping costs (I live in Italy)
Cheers!
Hi Alessandro
It will be an Ebook (PDF format) that you will be able to download immediately after your purchase.

Awesome! Thanks!
Hi Joe!
This books sounds like a missing link between theory alone and bass playing!
Something that I had to figured out myself for the most part, I’m really looking forward to it!
It looks like a great teaching material too!
Can you show something more about the “infamous” ear training part?
will it be available for non paypal users?
Thank you!
You’ll have to purchase it through Paypal, but Paypal allows you to purchase with a credit card.

Hi Joe Paolo here,
I’ve just done your Functional Diatonic & Non Diatonic Harmony course which is part of your marvelous Bass Mastery Course.
The question is:
do you reckon I need this new book or everything about Functional Harmony has been already covered in the course I’m doing?
And if everithing has’nt been covered what’s the missing part!
Your great man!
All the bass!
Paolo
Hi Paolo
The book has more information than you studied in the video course, so it would serve to be an expanded companion to what you already wen through.

I’ve just watched the second video. Great job Joe! Can’t wait to get hold of the book…
Hi Joe
Just watched your second video. First I thought may be a Swiss cheese guy, but I might actually not know any of this stuff! Ideally I’d love too know it all, but realistically I’m just an amature bass enthusiast who’ll probably never go down the Jazz route. For the little time I can actually spend on the bass, is the new book going to suit a person like me? I will probably buy it regardless, because it does sound really good. Nevertheless I’d be interested to know your thoughts about bass players like me with very little time.
Best regards
Gareth
Gareth said,…”I might not know any of this stuff…Ideally I’d love to know it all.”
Answer: Why not aspire to meet this somewhere in the middle? You have stated two extremes from knowing nothing to knowing it all. There are a lot of harmonic concepts that would enable you to enjoy what you do at a higher level.
Gareth said: “…realistically I’m just an amature bass enthusiast who’ll probably never go down the Jazz route.”
Answer: There is a large repertoire of popular music that follows the principles of Functional Harmony. The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Burt Bacharach, The Eagles, Sting, Elton John, John Legend and many more, all have written tunes that follow the principles that I outline in this book.
Gareth said: “I’d be interested to know your thoughts about bass players like me with very little time.”
Answer: Everybody has very little time. You have to employ what I call the “Dizzy Concept”. I once asked Dizzy Gillespie how much he practiced and he said, “I practice every spare minute that I have.” He meant that if he had ten minutes spare, he would pull his horn out and play. Most people would be on Facebook if they had a spare ten minutes. Rewarding time with your instrument doesn’t have to be calculate by the amount of hours you spend, but rather doing something everyday- and I mean everyday! Of course if you are enthusiastic about something, How could you not be more involved with becoming a better musician?
Joe
This is absolutely superb advise and I totally agree with you. It is a great to regain some perspective from somebody who knows what they are talking about. In fact a while back I already took some your advice that you gave out in a webinar elsewhere. You mentioned about practising everyday (however little) and this is something I have taken to heart. I’m pretty sure I have done this for several months since you passionately explained the benefits. You are an inspiration and it is an absolute pleasure to gain these amazing words of wisdom and experience from you. I will buy the book as I suspect it is a wealth of knowledge. I will enjoy whatever journey, however far, it takes me.
Many thanks for taking the time to reply
Gareth
Great attitude Gareth- keep on keeping on!
All the Bass!
Joe
