John Coltrane’s Giant Steps is without a doubt one of the most challenging harmonic progressions to play over with authority and cohesiveness.  In the late 50’s, Coltrane was experimenting with different harmonic substitutions while studying the Schillinger System of Composition.  It was there that he discovered the ‘Three Tonics System of Harmony’ and wrote Giant Steps based around this theory.
